Continuing our Jazz Night blog series about each of the jazz legends: Bird, Brubeck & CT. Our third and final blog is from PMAC Teaching Artist, Eric Klaxton. Eric tells us about how Charlie “Bird” Parker’s music was intricate:

“Charlie Parker’s playing has always amazed me. I was pretty young when I first heard it and didn’t realize how much technical facility it took on the instrument to execute. But it wasn’t just a matter of technical facility that made it great. There was a very deep understanding of harmony combined with a playful sense of rhythm. His playing changed the music permanently. Bird had a way of effortlessly crafting a sound that came from the blues and was as intricate as Bach.

Parker’s music is rather perfect. When you start to look at the details, it’s hard to imagine that anybody could improvise something that elegant that consistently. I’m still learning new Bird melodies and probably will be for the rest of my days. Charlie Parker will inspire musicians for generations to come.” – Eric Klaxton
