PMAC New Horizons Band Assistant Conductor
Description

Portsmouth Music and Arts Center seeks a music educator and conductor to assist with the New Horizons Band (NHB). The New Horizons Band assistant conductor will assist the NHC conductor to lead PMAC adult students to achieve their full creative potential, while focusing on teaching concert band repertoire that is pedagogically appropriate. The position begins in September 2026.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Education and NHB Conductor, duties are as follows:

  • Be available to assist and substitute conduct the New Horizons Band from 7:00-9:00PM each Tuesday, September through May.
  • Assist at seasonal concerts in December and May
  • Organize and attend placement auditions 2-3 days per year - currently in mid September and January
  • Collaborate with the COO, Director of Education, and New Horizons Band Conductor to establish ensemble policies, audition requirements and scheduling
  • Collaborate with PMAC wind and brass teaching artists to recruit students to participate in the ensembles
  • Attend faculty and planning meetings several times a year
  • Qualified candidates will have the option of earning additional income teaching lessons and classes at PMAC
  • This position can be combined with the New Horizons Beginner Band Conductor position.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent professional experience required, conducting degree or wind pedagogy experience preferred. 1-2 years conducting experience in a community setting is a plus. Candidates must have a working knowledge of band repertoire for beginner and intermediate musicians and demonstrate effective rehearsal techniques.
