On Saturday, March 15, more than 80 musicians gathered for something truly special: the annual New Hampshire New Horizons Band Combined Concert. This unique event brings together adult community bands from across the state—based in the Lakes Region, Concord, Monadnock, and Portsmouth—for one day of music, camaraderie, and celebration. PMAC’s New Horizons Band was thrilled to participate once again, joining fellow musicians from across the state in this joyful celebration of community music-making.
Each band rehearses independently for two months, and on concert day, everyone unites to rehearse and perform the full program together—for the first and only time. The result is an inspiring musical experience that reminds us all what’s possible when we join forces.
This year felt especially meaningful. Last year’s concert was canceled due to weather, making it two years since our last performance together. The joy in the room was palpable as old friends reunited and new connections were made.
With six conductors across the four bands, each led one piece in the program, creating a dynamic mix of styles—from a classic Sousa march to concert works to crowd-pleasing pops. I had the honor of conducting the theme from The Incredibles, and it truly lived up to its name—an energetic, joyful moment that had us all grinning from ear to ear.
These concerts are powerful reminders of why we make music. Yes, we push ourselves musically. But just as important, we come together as a community—sharing laughter, encouragement, and the satisfaction of a collective goal achieved.
This tradition began more than a decade ago when Mary Divers, then director of the Lakes Region band, reached out about a joint performance. In those early years, just two bands came together for a few shared pieces. Today, it’s grown into a full-day festival with a statewide reach—and a lasting sense of belonging.
We’re already looking ahead to 2026, when PMAC hopes to once again host this celebration in Portsmouth. If you’re in the area, we hope you’ll join us. The music will be inspiring, the energy contagious, and the message clear: we’re better together.
To all the musicians who participated this year—thank you for sharing your time, talent, and joy. Bravo!
