Meet Samuel Smith

Cellist Samuel Whitney Smith served as a member of the Langroise Trio in residence at the College of Idaho where he taught cello and chamber music  and conducted the College of Idaho Sinfonia. The Langroise Trio, founded in 1991, has performed on concert series  across the country including the Kennedy Center. They have performed  eight world premieres, produced four CDs and were selected to showcase at  the Arts Northwest Conference.  

In addition to performing a regular concert schedule with the Langroise Trio,  Samuel served as Associate Principal and Principal Cello with the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra. Prior to coming to Idaho, Smith served as Principal Cello with the Ft. Wayne  Philharmonic and was a member of the Freimann String Quartet. While in  Ft. Wayne he was a frequent soloist on subscription concerts performing  concerti by Haydn, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich as well as  the Brahms Double Concerto and the Triple Concerto of Beethoven.

During this time Samuel served as Assistant Principal and Section Cello with  the Grant Park Symphony in Chicago. Samuel was a founding member of  the Northeast Indiana Chamber Festival, co-founder of Chamber Music at Paradise Point and founder and Artistic Director of the Sawtooth Cello Festival which  combined the study of cello and martial arts. He has served on the cello  faculty of the Rocky Mountain Summer Conservatory and conducted the Sun Valley Youth Orchestra for 15 seasons.  Mr. Smith was a featured soloist on numerous occasions with Idaho  ensembles including Idaho Dance Theatre, Idaho Falls Symphony, Boise  Baroque Orchestra and the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra.  

As soloist with the Boise Philharmonic, he performed concerti by Saint Saens, Shostakovich and Barber as well as a concerto written for him by  David Alan Earnest. Most recently Samuel performed as cello soloist in  Strauss’ Don Quixote.
